Application testing has evolved rapidly mainly thanks to an increased focus on DevOps processes with the biggest impact being that application testing now occurs concurrently alongside the development of the actual application. Now, providers of application testing services in the cloud are adjusting the way they expose their services to better match that new reality.

Sauce Labs today unfurled an update to its namesake application testing service in the cloud that presents a new user interface optimized for continuous testing and is also more tightly integrated with continuous integration frameworks such as Jenkins, Bamboo, Travis CI, Circle CI and TeamCity.

The primary goal driving this update, says Sauce Labs CTO Steve Hazel, is to better align application testing with agile development processes. In fact, a recent survey of 504 developers conducted by the market research firm Dimensional Research on behalf of Sauce Labs found that 94 percent of respondents had changed the way they approach application testing in the wake of embracing agile development and continuous integration methodologies.

Other new features added in this release include support for single sign-on capabilities and tools to track how third-party tools are being used across the organization.

Application testing has pretty much followed application development into the public cloud. Rather than dedicating IT infrastructure to application development and testing, most organizations now prefer to use the cloud to provide those resources as needed. However, just because an application was built in a public cloud doesn’t necessarily mean it will stay there.
