Sauce Labs sauciers

Jason Huggins, Executive Software Chef

Jason Huggins

Jason Huggins co-founded Sauce Labs and currently leads product direction. Prior to Sauce Labs, Jason was a Test Engineer at Google where he supported the grid-scale "Selenium Farm" for testing Google applications such as Gmail and Google Docs. Jason's experience also includes time at ThoughtWorks in Chicago as a software developer. While at ThoughtWorks, Jason created the Selenium testing framework out of the need to cross-browser test a new in-house time and expense system.

When not programming in Python or JavaScript, Jason enjoys hacking on Arduino-based electronics projects. Jason has spent time in New York City, LA, and the Bay Area, but Chicago is his kind of town.

Favorite Cooking Story: I can't wait for the day I figure out how to make my own croissants from scratch. Until then, I'm doodling plans for building a 'Mr. Croissant' kitchen complement to Mr. Coffee.

Favorite Sauce: Iams Savory Sauce. When dogfooding your applications, don't forget the sauce!

He raised $25M in venture, private and partner investment including Series B in October 2001 at a 100% premium over Series A. John has also held previous executive and senior leadership positions at iChat, Auspex, and Sun Microsystems.

Favorite Cooking Story: I successfully salvaged a tasty meal from the spectacle of three foot flames billowing out of a gas grill from a rack of lamb gone awry.

Favorite Sauce: John's own 10-point marinade used for steaks and lamb - so good, guests always beg for the recipe!

Steven Hazel, Senior Director of Development

Steve Hazel

Steven Hazel has been working in startups since Britney Spears first appeared on the pop charts. Before co-founding Sauce Labs, Steve created codepad.org, an online compiler and simple collaboration tool. Previously, he served as Director of Engineering at BitTorrent, Inc, and held senior development roles at Grouper Networks (acquired by Sony Pictures in 2006), FolderShare (acquired by Microsoft in 2005), and Audiogalaxy.

Despite having a home and an office, Steve lives and works primarily in a small number of cafes in San Francisco.

Favorite Cooking Story: A college roommate once convinced me to try putting bananas in a curry. Pro tip: don't put bananas in curry.

Favorite Sauce: Steve grew up in Austin, Texas, and is sure he'll never get tired of salsa.

Santiago Suarez Ordoñez, Customer Success Engineer

Santiago Suarez Ordoñez

Santiago or "Santi" comes from an old style software development shop, where he started as a manual tester and led the company towards test automation in the search for productivity. At first, Santi was a Mercury QTP practitioner, but later focused on Selenium and Python. Santi set up the functional automation environment and first tests for eduCommons (OpenCourseWare Consortium, MIT) and has worked on several Python development projects. Addtionally, Santi handled some writing and the entire infrastructure of the Selenium 1.0 official documentation and remains a top forums contributor.

Santi works and lives in Rosario, Argentina and loves to sail and enjoy nature.

Favorite Cooking Story: One day on a friend's boat, we had to improvise to strain the spaghetti. We sacrificed one of the boat window screens which turned out to not be the best decision. We ended up with dirty spaghetti for dinner and mosquitoes inside the boat the whole night.

Favorite Sauce: Santi's first choice when it's time to eat: Bolognese.

Sean McQuillan, Software Developer

Sean McQuillan

Sean joined Sauce Labs after an abrupt transition from an academic career to the San Francisco startup scene. He has been programming since before he could type, starting with Apple Basic which built a warm place in his heart for REPLs. Sean's favorite topics are compilers and networking.

Favorite Cooking Story: Dessert for breakfast. Dessert for lunch. Dessert for dinner. Dessert for dessert. Best birthday gift evar.

Favorite Sauce: Red curry paste, clear broth, vinegar, sugar, and BANANAS!

Miki Tebeka, Principal Software Developer

Miki Tebeka

I've worked in software development for more than 10 years now. Been in big companies like Intel and Qualcomm and small ones like FATTOC and Sauce Labs. I've touched many areas of software development, from assemblers and linkers to web sites to information retrieval. I do most of my programming in Python, however any language that will fit the job is good for me.

Apart from work, I do contribute to open source projects and keep a blog about Python and programming.

Favorite Cooking Story: Once while hiking, we ran out of sugar. We tried to sweeten the tea with some juice from a concentrated fruit can we had. This was about the time I started drinking tea without sugar.

Favorite Sauce: My mother makes the best "zan and zuse" sauce. It is a mix of juice from roasted beef, cream, butter and other healthy stuff. Can't beat that on a good roast beef.

Alex Scalisi, Director Customer Development

Alex Scalisi

Alex has been facilitating solutions for over 11 years. Whether through sales, business development, or his time volunteering as a community mediator in San Francisco, he has a passion for helping parties uncover a solution to meet their needs. As Director of Customer Development, Alex is responsible for the development and execution of the Sauce Labs sales strategy. Prior to Sauce Labs, Alex was Director of Sales and Business Development for VerticalResponse, a leading email service provider. Favorite Cooking Story: Serving over 50 live Maine lobsters to friends and family in a San Francisco park using two turkey fryers to boil the water.

Favorite Sauce: My own version of the family pasta "gravy". If you think you've added too much garlic, you haven't.

Jeremy Avnet, Software Developer

Jeremy Avnet

A system administrator for almost a decade, Jeremy switched to software engineering in 2008 when he fell for Python. His academic background is in complex adaptive systems and he attended the Santa Fe Institute's complex systems summer school in Qingdao, China. Jeremy was a founder at Mosuki.com and was the Senior System Administrator at BitTorrent, Inc.

Jeremy is just wild about asian teas.

Favorite Cooking Story: In college, my chemist girlfriend and I wanted to make chai. In order to maximize flavor she flipped the lid of the pot and put ice in it. This created a janky reflux apparatus in which vaporized essential oils would condense on the lid and fall back into the mix. I've been using this technique ever since.

Favorite Sauce: Jeremy's robust gravy made from a mushroom stock reduction and ghee roux. I make this from the stock remaining after cooking a seitan "roast". Not only is it great to not throw away the used stock, it's one of the best gravies I've ever had.

Jim Baker, Lead Software Developer

Jim Baker

Jim has over 15 years of software development experience, focusing on business intelligence, enterprise application integration, and high-performance web applications. A three-time startup veteran, Jim is a member of the Python Software Foundation and a committer on Jython. He has presented at Devoxx, EuroPython, JavaOne, and the Python Conference, as well at numerous user groups and is a coauthor of The Definitive Guide to Jython from Apress. Jim is a graduate of both Harvard and Brown.

Favorite Cooking Story: Most good cooking stories with me seem to involve a camp stove. One of the best was on Sandy Point Beach on Block Island. We had loaded our panniers with crabs and mussels bought at the fishing port of Point Judith, and taken along on the ferry. At the beach we steamed them in seaweed gathered right there and seawater scooped from Block Island Sound. It was all made perfect with a home-made aioli with lobster roe mixed in.

Favorite Sauce: Aioli (see above) and other tasty variants on mayonnaise.

Frank Wierzbicki, Lead Software Developer

Frank Wierzbicki

Frank Wierzbicki is the head of the Jython project and a lead software developer at Sauce Labs. He has been programming since the Commodore 64 was the king of home computers (look it up kids!) and can't imagine why anyone would do anything else for a living. Frank's most enduring hobby is picking up new programming languages, but he has yet to find one that is more fun to work with than Python.

Favorite Cooking Story: Cooking a 15 pound turkey in 45 minutes in my driveway. Yes, we deep fry turkey in the South :)

Favorite Sauce: Anything involving smashed up cilantro, garlic and lime (because it is delicious)

Malini Das, Software Developer Intern

Malini Das

Malini is an undergraduate Computer Science student from the University of Waterloo. She loves learning practical programming solutions and wearing different hats. As such, she finds it extremely hard to stay away from the start-up scene, this being her third start-up based internship. When not furiously typing away at a keyboard, she enjoys reading, music and martial arts.

Favorite Cooking Story: Making egg-mess. I move every four months, and almost every time I move, I forget to bring a spatula, and it is my morning habit to make an omelette. It's always a tasty disaster!

Favorite Sauce: 1/3 vinegar, 1/3 maple syrup, 1/3 soy sauce, whole lot of chili and garlic. Horrible for your health, but delicious nonetheless!

Raymond Hettinger, Director of Technology and Controller

Raymond Hettinger

Raymond learned to code in sixth grade using a teletype and a Data General mini-computer. His high school days filled leisurely afternoons reading Donald Knuth and hacking a Z-80. Then, denying his own true nature, he became a Certified Public Accountant for fifteen years. Fortunately, he woke-up a decade ago, became a Python core developer and has been happy ever since.

Favorite Cooking Story: Woke-up at scout camp and the milk was frozen. All was not lost. It turns out that it's possible to use tomato juice with the pancake mix. Go figure.

Favorite Sauce: Just about everything tastes better covered in Hollandaise sauce made with a dash of cayenne pepper.
